Ellen became a primary school teacher, her first posting was at Goomalling, W.A. then at Kwolyin where she met Bill who was farming in the district at that time with his brother. After marrying, Bill and Ellen were farmers first at Walgoolan just out of Merriden, W.A. then at Moora until their retirement to Bassendean.
