James William Williams was born Bristol, Gloucestershire in England, married 25.10.1840 in St. Paul's Church, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Mary Ann Baker, daughter of James and Eliza Baker. Mary Ann was born 25.12.1822 died 05.05.1886. The came from Liverpool to Melbourne 15.06.1854 on the ship "Queen of the East". They arrived in Melbourne with their first four Sons, in September 1854 and headed for the Mount Alexander Goldfields near present day Castlemaine, settling by the Loddon River at Glenluce. The fifth Son, John Alfred came out later with his Grandfather James Baker in November 1859.

06.10.1841 - 22.02.1873 Joseph Edward (Joe) Williams born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Joseph came to Australia with his parents in 1854. He married in 1866 Sarah Jane Dyer. They had 5 children.

All information regarding this family came from Stuart Williams. From copy of Death Certificate, Deaths in the district of Fryerstown in the Colony of Victoria, Registered by W Mercer. 22nd February 1873 at Fryerstown Mount Alexander Shire, County Talbot, Joseph Williams, Carter, male, 31 years, Accidentally killed by a fall from his horse. Verdict at Inquest held by George Smythe 23rd February,1873. Informant. Wm. Knight, Police Constable, Camp Fryerstown, present at Inquest.


21.10.1843 - 21.07.1891 James Baker Williams born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. James came to Australia with his parents in 1854. He married 09.10.1871 Mary Ann Crichton born 14.04.1850. They had 10 children.

The youngest child, Harold, was only 3 months old when his father died from a fall in a mine at Taradale. From Death Certificate, Deaths in the District of Malmsbury in the Colony of Victoria, registered by S G Fleming. 21st July in North Drummond, Glenlyonshire, County Talbot, James Williams, Male, aged 47 years, Cause of Death. Concussion of the Brain. Buried 23rd July 1891 at Fryerstown.


05.06.1846 - 31.01.1929 George Thomas Williams.

George was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. George came to Australia with his parents in 1854. He married 15.12.1870 Elizabeth Dick. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Jane (Rogerson) Dick. Elizabeth was born about 1850 and died in 1923 in Castlemaine. R/No. 983.

Cause of Death. Senility, Retention of urine, Exhaustion. Duration of illness. 4 months.





26.09.1848 - 16.01.1919 Charles Frederic (k) Williams born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Charles came to Australia with his parents in 1854. He married 03.09.1873 Mary Donnes born 09.10.1848 died 18.09.1934 in Tatura, Victoria aged 86 years.

Charles, occupation given on Marriage Certificate is that of Farmer.

Mary Ferrens of Cumberland Street, born October 9th 1848 and baptised 12 November 1848. From Marriage Certificate. Married at Christchurch, Castlemaine on 3rd September 1873, Charles Frederic Williams and Mary Donnes, Bachelor and Spinster, both aged 24. Marriage ceremony performed by Archibald Crawford, Archdeacon of Castlemaine, according to the rites of the United Church of England and Ireland. Charles's residence given as Glenluce and Mary's given as Tarilta. Witnesses appear to be J Donnes and A Donnes.


12.02.1851 - 24.06.1903 John Alfred Williams born in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. John came out to Australia with his grandfather, James Baker, in November 1859 Royal Bride when he was 8 years old. He married 04.03.1879 in Castlemaine, Victoria Julia Whitton Donnes b 26.10.1859 Glenluce Victoria. Mary Donne's half sister. Julia died 21.10.1896 after giving birth to Julian.

Julia Donnes. Death certificate states Father – Samuel Donnes, Miner and Mother – Catherine Donnes, Maiden Name Hinds. This is an inconsistency, as other records state Maiden name of Catherine as Reily. Fay Tuckey. From Wendy Kelly WA – Julia Williams died 21 October 1896 about a week after giving birth to Julian (Jack,) so Juliann's birth date may be incorrect, as I assumed Julia died in childbirth. Samuel Donos aged 45 years, Miner, Birth place – Greece. Mother–s name. Catherine Reilly, aged 27 years, Birth place. County Cavan, Ireland. Believed to have died in childbirth. From copy of Death Certificate. Deaths in the District of Fryerstown in the Colony of Victoria, Registered by W Hargrave. On 21 October 1896 at Glenluce, Fryers Creek, shire of Mount Alexander, County Talbot, Colony of Victoria, Julia Williams, Domestic (Duties), female aged 36 years. Cause of Death, Confinement, Pulmonary Embolism 1 hour and a half, Certified by Dr Maxwell. Informant George Williams, Farmer, Brother–in–law. From notes on Burials at Fryerstown Cemetery by Ben Williams.

From Copy of Marriage Certificate. District – Talbot. No. in Register 847. On March 4th 1879 at Christ Church, Castlemaine. Marriage after Banns was solemnized between Us according to the Tites of the Church of England, signed John Alfred Williams, aged 27 of Glenluce, Farmer, Bachelor, Birth place, Bristol, Parents, James Baker Williams (deceased, Engineer, England) and Mary Baker Williams, and Signature Julia Donnes, Resident of Guildford, aged 19. Birth place, Tarilta. Parents names – Samuel Donnos (Miner, Deceased) and Catherine Watson. This poses a question, did Catherine re–marry after Samuel's Death? Witnesses – George Williams and Catherine Mc?

Buried 23rd October 1896 at Fryerstown Cemetery. Undertaker, Thomas Odgers. Officiating Minister, Rev. Alexander McKay, Bible Christian. Information from Stuart Williams 2002. John Williams (aged stated as 7) and his grandfather James Baker (aged 62) departed bristol on the "Royal Bride" in 1854, arriving in Melbourne in September of that year. Occupation given on Death Certificate is that of farmer.


03.09.1855 - 16.08.1935 Ann Frances Williams born in Fryers Creek, Victoria, Australia, their first Australian born child, married 03.09.1873 William MacLaren born 06.05.1842. From Military Records of William James Maclaren – her son, who put his mother's name down as his next of kin, causing her to be first informed of his death, which caused great distress to his widow– Mary Donnes.


24.10.1857 - 01.08.1943 Martha Alice Williams born in Fryerstown, Victoria, Australia. This little town now has a population of around 400, but in the days of the gold rush, it had a population of over 15,000 people. Martha married in 1879 William Francis Miller born in 1857.
